A healthy living environment is fundamental for the health and wellbeing of our communities. We know that cold, damp, unventilated housing increases the risk of respiratory illness in children, it increases mortality from cardiovascular and respiratory disease in older people, and it exacerbates other illnesses such as mental health conditions.
The quality of New Zealand housing stock is poor. Approximately two thirds of our housing is uninsulated and many New Zealand homes tend to be cold with temperatures falling well below WHO recommendations of a minimum of 18°C.
